Are You Considering Newborn Photography in but Have Some Questions?

Don’t worry, I’m here to help.

As a newborn photographer in Youghal, East Cork, I understand the value of capturing these early moments in your baby’s life.

If you are a new parent, you are probably already overwhelmed by all the decisions you need to make. Choosing your newborn photographer does not have to be one of them.

Let me guide you through the process and answer some of the most common questions about newborn photography sessions at The Heirloom Studio.

What Should I Look for When Hiring a Newborn Photographer?

When choosing a newborn photographer, look beyond the photographs alone. You are trusting someone to handle and pose your very young baby, so experience, safety and professionalism are just as important as style.

Check that the photographer:

  • Has specific experience photographing newborn babies
  • Uses a gentle, baby-led approach and never forces a pose
  • Supports the baby’s head, neck and airway properly
  • Uses a parent or spotter for poses that require additional support
  • Uses composite editing for photographs that cannot be created safely in one image
  • Keeps blankets, wraps, props and studio surfaces clean
  • Allows plenty of time for feeding, changing and settling
  • Has a consistent portfolio showing real newborn sessions
  • Is fully insured and provides clear booking terms
  • Clearly explains what is included in the price, how images are selected and when they will be delivered

You should also feel comfortable asking questions before booking. A professional newborn photographer should be happy to explain how they work and should always place your baby’s comfort and wellbeing ahead of creating a particular photograph.

Before becoming a professional photographer, I worked as a paediatric nurse, including in neonatal and intensive care settings. This experience continues to influence the calm, careful and baby-led approach I use at The Heirloom Studio.

What Can I Expect During a Newborn Photography Session?

During your newborn photography session, I will create a calm and comfortable environment for your baby and gently guide you throughout the entire experience.

Depending on the package you choose, your session can include individual newborn portraits, photographs with parents and sibling photographs.

I encourage parents and siblings to take part because these family photographs often become some of the most meaningful images from the session.

You do not need to know how to pose. I will guide you so that everyone looks comfortable, natural and connected.

If you have a meaningful item you would like to include, such as a special blanket or family keepsake, I am always happy to discuss how it may be incorporated into the session.

When Should I Book My Newborn Photography Session?

I recommend booking your newborn photography session while you are still pregnant, ideally after your 20-week scan.

Your due date will be placed in my diary as a temporary booking date. Once your baby arrives, we can arrange the final session date.

Newborn sessions are ideally held when your baby is around seven to ten days old. However, every baby and birth experience is different, and beautiful newborn photographs can still be created with older babies.

Booking during your pregnancy is the best way to ensure availability around your due date.

Do I Need to Bring Anything?

You do not need to bring anything for your newborn but milk.

The studio provides most of the items needed for your baby, including:

  • Newborn outfits
  • Wraps and blankets
  • Props and backdrops
  • Dresses for mothers
  • Dresses for younger girls, depending on sizing

You are welcome to bring a personal item such as a special blanket, toy or family keepsake, but this is completely optional.

I also recommend bringing your usual baby essentials, including nappies, milk and a soother if your baby uses one.

When Will I See My Newborn Photographs?

After your session, you will receive an online selection gallery from which you can choose your favourite photographs.

Once your selection has been made, your chosen images will be carefully retouched and prepared for delivery.

Your package may include high-resolution digital photographs, professional prints or both. Albums, framed artwork and additional images are also available should you wish to add them.

How Much Does Newborn Photography Cost in Cork?

Newborn photography sessions at The Heirloom Studio begin at €350.

The final price will depend on the type of session you choose, the number of photographs included and whether you would like additional images, prints, an album or framed artwork.

Newborn photography is a specialised service that requires time, experience, professional equipment and careful editing. It is also an investment in photographs that will become more meaningful as your baby grows.

My aim is to provide beautiful, high-quality photographs and finished products that your family can treasure for a lifetime.

Is Newborn Photography Worth It?

Your baby will only be this small for a very short time.

Newborn photography allows you to preserve the tiny details, expressions and connections that can be so easy to forget during those busy first weeks.
